History

The Beginning

CARMIM - Cooperativa Agrícola de Reguengos de Monsaraz - was founded in 1971, and the construction of the original building dates from the same year, designed for processing 1,500 tons of grapes per year.

Given the large accession from wine-growers of the region, these figures were soon exceeded, and therefore emerged the need to build special deposits, referred to as "balloons" due to its spherical shape. At that time, marketing consisted on just two types of wines: red and white. Over the years, the wine-making capacity was so insufficient that CARMIM had to increase the winery in order to better carry out the wine-making of red wines, back in 1983. This project didn't follow the structure of the other winery and the best techniques available at the time were implemented, from vats with automatic wine-making systems and automatic discharge to worm-type conveyor sets for transport of the masses and continuous wine-making lines, CARMIM invested at the time in the most modern and advanced resources.

By this time the percentage of wines marketed in bottles was already substantial and the range of CARMIM's offer was by then extended to a Reserve Wine and a Garrafeira. The latter, with the name Garrafeiras dos Sócios, is today unanimously considered a classic and one of the best Portuguese wines. The growing success of CARMIM increasingly attracted more members, which reached 99 percent of the wine-growers of the region of Reguengos at the end of the 80s, a number that remains until today.

In 1988, after joining the EU, the brand "Reguengos" was given to all the Quality Wines Produced in the Specified Region (VQPRD) of Reguengos. This Brand was a major recognition for the quality of wines from the region and the main thrust for the promotion of the wines in the domestic, community and extra-community market.

In 1991 the "Nova Adega" (New Winery) was finally built, based on very different oenological concepts of the other winery, the "Adega Velha" (Old Winery). In this new space, the discontinuous processes are privileged, which are much smoother and technically versatile than the continuous lines of the "Old Winery". Cold systems to control fermentation temperatures and pneumatic presses were also introduced for a better control of the process.

In 1994, the first CARMIM white wine fermented in casks was created, with the name "Régia Colheita".

In 1997, after approval of the investment project, the construction of the new Bottling unit begins. That year, CARMIM adopts a new stance in the wine market, with the creation of a Marketing Office and hiring Promoters/Merchandisers, closing the cycle from the producer to the consumer. It was then possible to carry out a close and detailed monitoring of the whole activity that starts in Reguengos and ends on a table anywhere in the world.

In 2003, CARMIM's Wine Tourism project begins, increasing the influx of visitors to the company's agro-industrial facility.

In 2004, CARMIM achieves an "old" wish, with the opening of the new administration building by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sevinato Pinto. Built within the agro-industrial facility, this milestone marked the return to the origins of CARMIM, which started off by having its offices inside the winery itself.

In December 31th, 2011, CARMIM obtained the joint certification for their Quality Management, Environmental Management and Food Safety Management Systems for the NP EN ISO 9001:2008, NP EN ISO 14001:2004 and NP EN ISO 22000:2005 standards.

In 2013, it achieved another important goal in the field of certification, through the IFS Food version 6 certification.

In 2014, CARMIM's status of SME Leader was renovated by IAPMEI, and again in 2017 which recognizes the top economic and financial performance among national SME: with this financial soundness, based on innovation and competitiveness, CARMIM actively assumes its role in the development of the region where it operates.
