CARMIM – Agricultural Cooperative of Reguengos de Monsaraz – was created in 1971 by a group of sixty wine growers. Thirty seven years later, the quality of CARMIM wines has become a byword for excellence. The company leads the national market in the quality wine segment.
CARMIM currently has around a thousand members and produces 24 wine references: from whites to reds, from the young wines to the reserves, not to forget the liquorous, rosés or sparkling wines. CARMIM also produces marc brandy and olive oils of recognised quality.
The wines of CARMIM have already been distinguished by over two hundred and fifty prizes in various national and international tenders. Recently, the Monsaraz Sparkling Wine, one of the company’s newest products, was awarded the National Prize for Beverages and Food Packaging 2007, attributed by the Alimentaria Lisboa 2007 for its inclusion of Braille on the label.
The quality of the raw material, deriving from a Denomination of Origin region, is one of the benefits of this Cooperative; alongside the human capital and an 80,000m2 agro-industrial complex endowed with state-of-the-art technology. There is a reception capacity for one million two hundred thousand kilos of grapes per day, bottling of fifteen thousand bottles per hour and storage of up to thirty two million litres, making CARMIM the largest winery in the Alentejo and also one of the biggest in the country!
The high investment rates in recent years express the major investment effort made at CARMIM, to wit in terms of the technological modernisation of the winery, clearly illustrating that this has been a strategic priority in the policies followed by recent Management bodies. With one of the most modern agro-industrial facilities in the countries located in the heart of an important wine-growing sub-region of the Alentejo, this company not only represents an effective contribution to the Gross Domestic Product of the country by way of a high rate of Gross Added Value, but is also one of the main socio-economic development engines in the region, helping to tap into and attract new possibilities in the field of tourism.
However, more important than the figures are people and this is why, when we say its is important to stress the human side of CARMIM, we are referring to this mission, of a greater scope but very well defined, of human enhancement, of the growing well-being and the improvement in the living conditions of members.
Furthermore, the production of olive oil, Oenotourism and the internationalisation of its wines are priority areas in which the company has invested and will continue to invest in the future!
With 46 years having elapsed since its inception, today CARMIM is a major reference not only in terms of Alentejan Wines, but in particular at national level.
